Senior Native Android Developer - AOSP / ROM Development & System-Level Debugging

RemoteFull-TimeWorking hours to be confirmed during hiring

This role needs both sides of Android: strong native app development and hands-on AOSP and ROM engineering. You will build apps in Kotlin and Java, and you will also work in the AOSP source, build and customize ROMs, develop privileged system apps, manage platform signing and configure SELinux policies for enterprise Push-to-Talk devices. You must have contributed to at least one shipped ROM, OEM firmware or enterprise Android device project. Experience limited to standard Android app development will not be considered.

Remote senior native Android role based in India or the Philippines: build Android apps in Kotlin and Java and work at the AOSP, ROM and framework level on enterprise Push-to-Talk devices, from Jetpack Compose to SELinux and platform signing.

About this role

This is a remote role based in India or the Philippines for a Senior Native Android Developer with a rare combination of strong Android application development expertise and hands-on AOSP and ROM-level system engineering experience. You will develop, maintain and troubleshoot native Android applications while also working at the operating system and framework level for enterprise Push-to-Talk (PTT) devices, collaborating with development, QA, hardware and product teams, backend developers and firmware teams. The role requires a thorough understanding of the complete Android technology stack, from Jetpack Compose and MVVM-based application development through to Android framework modifications, SELinux policies, system partitions and hardware abstraction layers. On the application side you will design and build native apps in Kotlin and Java, implement modern UI with Jetpack Compose and XML, manage asynchronous programming with Coroutines and Flow, and integrate REST APIs using Retrofit and OkHttp. On the system side you will work directly with AOSP source code, build and customize Android ROMs using Repo, Soong and Make, develop privileged system applications, manage platform signing, configure SELinux policies, and troubleshoot complex issues spanning the application, framework and hardware layers. Experience with MediaTek or Qualcomm Board Support Packages (BSPs) is highly preferred. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who can independently investigate and resolve complex technical issues on real devices and fix root causes rather than rely on temporary workarounds.

What you’ll do

  • Design and build native Android applications in Kotlin and Java
  • Implement modern UI using Jetpack Compose and XML
  • Manage asynchronous programming with Kotlin Coroutines and Flow, and integrate REST APIs using Retrofit and OkHttp
  • Work directly with AOSP source code, and build and customize Android ROMs using Repo, Soong and Make
  • Make Android framework modifications and work with system partitions and hardware abstraction layers
  • Develop privileged system applications and manage platform signing and system-level permissions
  • Configure SELinux policies, Android initialization scripts and system configurations
  • Integrate audio routing, Bluetooth and hardware buttons on enterprise Push-to-Talk (PTT) devices
  • Investigate and resolve complex issues across the application, framework and hardware layers, fixing root causes
  • Debug and validate on real devices, including ANR and crash analysis
  • Collaborate with development, QA, hardware and product teams, backend developers and firmware teams

What we’re looking for

  • 5+ years of professional native Android development experience
  • A combination of Android application development AND AOSP or ROM-level system engineering (both are mandatory; standard app development experience alone is not suitable)
  • At least one shipped ROM, OEM firmware or enterprise Android device project
  • Kotlin and Java (native Android development), C / C++, and Bash / Shell scripting
  • AOSP source code: building and customizing Android ROMs with Repo, Soong and Make on Linux-based Android build environments
  • Android framework modifications, and system and privileged application development
  • Platform signing, system-level permissions and SELinux policies (.te files)
  • Android initialization scripts and system configurations
  • Jetpack Compose and XML-based UI development, MVVM architecture, Kotlin Coroutines and Flow, and Room Database
  • Android Media, Camera and Audio APIs, and APK signing and Gradle build management
  • ADB and Logcat, ANR and crash analysis (tombstones, native crashes), Perfetto and Android Studio Profiler
  • Audio routing, Bluetooth and hardware button integration
  • REST API integration (Retrofit, OkHttp), and real-device debugging and testing

Nice to have

  • Python
  • XML
  • SQL
  • Makefile / Soong / Android.bp
  • AIDL / HIDL
  • Gradle (Groovy / Kotlin DSL)
  • MediaTek BSP experience
  • Qualcomm BSP experience
  • Firebase or similar backend services
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) familiarity
  • Basic Linux server administration
  • Push-to-Talk hardware button integration experience
