About this role
You would be the bookkeeping function, not part of it. Day to day that means recording and categorising transactions, reconciling the bank, credit card and other accounts, running accounts payable and accounts receivable, raising invoices and chasing the ones that go unpaid, and processing payroll along with the entries behind it. Each month you would close the books and produce the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow report, and each year you would prepare the handover to the external accountant. Nobody checks the work before it reaches the owner, so finding a discrepancy and resolving it is yours to do rather than to escalate. The part that matters most is what happens after the books balance: reading what the numbers say, noticing a trend or an anomaly before anyone asks, and explaining it clearly to people who do not read financial statements for a living.
What you’ll do
- Record and categorise day-to-day transactions and keep the books accurate and up to date
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards and other accounts
- Run accounts payable and accounts receivable, including invoicing, payment tracking and following up on overdue invoices
- Process payroll and the related bookkeeping entries
- Run month-end and year-end closing activities
- Prepare income statements, balance sheets and cash flow reports for management
- Investigate discrepancies and resolve them independently
- Identify trends, anomalies and opportunities to strengthen financial controls
- Communicate professionally with vendors, customers and internal teams
What we’re looking for
- 3+ years of professional bookkeeping or accounting experience
- Full-cycle bookkeeping you have run yourself, not one part of a larger finance team
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Bank, credit card and account reconciliations
- Payroll processing and the related bookkeeping entries
- Invoicing and payment tracking
- Financial reporting - income statements, balance sheets and cash flow reports
- QuickBooks, Xero or similar accounting software
- Excel and/or Google Sheets
- Month-end and year-end closing activities
- Strong written and verbal English communication
- Attention to detail and the organisation to run several financial tasks at once
Nice to have
- Experience supporting audits and tax preparation
- Financial analysis and trend identification
- Process improvement and financial controls optimisation
- Experience handling confidential financial information in a remote setting
