Real, hands-on HVAC and mechanical knowledge is the core requirement here, above everything else. You will take equipment photos and specifications from a field team, assess existing and proposed boilers, heating, hot water and cooling systems, run BTU, kilowatt and therm based efficiency calculations, and determine whether a project qualifies for a utility rebate and for how much. You will also write the reports, maintain the project and permit tracker, and help with permit paperwork. You do NOT need to know PSE&G or any other rebate program on day one - program guidance is provided and the scope grows into more programs and states over time. What is not negotiable is that you understand how these systems actually work and can carry the calculations yourself. If your background is administrative rebate processing without the technical foundation underneath it, this role is likely not a fit.

About this role

This role supports a US-based mechanical and plumbing contractor from a fully remote desk. A field team visits properties and gathers equipment data - photos, nameplates, specifications - and sends it to you. From there the analysis is yours. You review the existing equipment, assess the proposed replacement, and work out the efficiency improvement using BTU, kilowatt and therm based calculations. You then research what the relevant utility rebate program requires, interpret its rules, and determine whether the project qualifies and at what value. The output is a detailed report in a shared spreadsheet, a centralized database tracking project and permit status kept current, and help preparing the permit paperwork itself. The work starts with the PSE&G program in New Jersey and expands into more programs and more states over time. The technical foundation is what matters most: you need to genuinely understand how these systems operate, because the calculations are yours to carry and there is nobody sitting next to you to check them.

What you’ll do

  • Review equipment specifications for boilers, heating, hot water and cooling systems from field photos and data
  • Assess existing and proposed equipment and calculate the efficiency improvement
  • Perform BTU, kilowatt and therm based calculations across different fuel types and efficiency ratings
  • Research and interpret utility rebate program requirements
  • Determine whether a project qualifies for a rebate and estimate the amount
  • Prepare detailed reports in shared spreadsheets
  • Maintain a centralized database tracking project and permit status
  • Assist with permit paperwork preparation
  • Work independently from field data without day-to-day supervision

What we’re looking for

  • Strong hands-on HVAC and mechanical systems experience - boilers, heating, hot water and cooling
  • Genuine understanding of how heating, cooling and hot water systems actually operate
  • Working knowledge of BTUs, kilowatts, therms, fuel types and equipment efficiency ratings
  • Ability to compare existing against proposed equipment and calculate efficiency improvements
  • Ability to research a utility rebate program and analyse whether a project qualifies
  • Strong analytical and calculation skills
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills in Excel or Google Sheets
  • Report preparation and documentation
  • Experience maintaining project or permit status databases
  • Permit paperwork preparation
  • Comfortable working US working hours

Nice to have

  • Prior experience with utility rebate programs, whether PSE&G or another US utility
  • Familiarity with energy or rebate programs across several US states
  • Experience supporting US-based contractors or mechanical and plumbing companies remotely
